The Golden Lake, cedar taiga and the way to Shambhala

Altai is a mountainous country in the heart of Asia, situated between the borders of Russia, Ka-zakhstan, Mongolia and China. This is a land of legends, paleontological discoveries and rare natural beauty. It was here that the merchants searched for the silk road, miners for gold, scientists for any signs of primitive people, and mystics – for the mysterious kingdom of Shambhala.

The Altai mountains are a living monument to the culture and history of the entire continent. The green valleys, surrounded by snowy ridges, have lived to see the Scythians, the warriors of Gen-ghis Khan, the Dzungar people, the Old Believers in exile and the builders of the first Soviet hydro-electric power station.
